In the run up to this event a knee injury put my attendance in doubt. Being a huge Formula 1 fan I was desperate to take part and a physio consultation let me know that no further damage would be done, so I was good to go. I took the view that I would approach this as a training [...]
The Mindset of an Injured (Aspirant) Triathlete
Over the last 15 years, like many amateur sportsmen, I’ve had to deal with my fair share of injuries, from bumps and bruises, to tears and strains, all the way up to fractures and dislocations. So now that I’m well into my late 30′s you would have thought I would be used to coping with [...]
Great Notley Spring Duathlon 2011
After my success at Houghton Hall in combating cramp I was looking forward to the Great Notley Duathlon and trying to execute a more aggressive race strategy. This was a slightly smaller distance with two 4km runs around Great Notley Country Park combined with two laps of a11km road cycle circuit around the surrounding villages. It was [...]
Bike Shoes or Trainers
When I first started racing I thought I would need to have proper bike shoes and clipless peddles as that is what everybody else seems to have. However after 2 races I am increasingly of the opinion that I was right to stick with wearing the running shoes throughout the race. The reason for this is simple, [...]
Houghton Hall Duathlon – April 2011
Following on from my first race I quickly booked onto my second race, this time an evening event in Norfolk at Houghton Hall, organised by Breathe Events. This one was slightly longer in that in addition to the two 5km runs it involved a 27km road ride. Having a new road bike I was keen to test [...]
Dealing with Cramp
Following my experiences in my first race with cramp, I was determined to avoid any future occurrence of this. When I played rugby I always added a sachet of Dyrolite to a bottle of lucosade sport ahead of the match and in addition to ensuring you had no hang over in the morning, it also ensured I didn’t [...]
Mud and Mayhem March 2011
After weeks of training the first race arrived. A recurring hip injury 3 weeks before the race hadn’t helped matters but I felt fit and ready to go. I had managed a few brick sessions (combining run with bike) and was pleased with my overall fitness. I choose the Mud and Mayhem race in Thetford Forest by Go [...]
Fear of the Swim
As with many people who come to Triathlon from sports such as rugby or football, the one thing that held me back from getting started was the swim. Not so much the fear of the swim, I can happily jump in a pool and swim a leisurely mile using breaststroke. It was more the knowledge [...]
Welcome
Welcome to my new blog, where I will chart the high’s and lows of my journey into the world of Triathlon and multi-sport. The journey began back in 2007 when my rugby career came to a sudden end with a bad leg injury. I was sure that I would never return to the sport, more [...]
Welcome
When my rugby playing days came to an end I needed a fresh challenge and focus for my training. Having a wide range of other sporting interests the obvious choice was Triathlon and after finding numerous excuses to avoid getting starting, I finally took the plunge in 2011. On this site I plan to chart the high's and lows of my journey into the world of Triathlon and multi-sport, plus share any hints and tips I come up with along the way. I hope you enjoy it!
